So the first decision you will need to make before purchasing a garage heaters is do you want the heater to heat a specific spot while you are in your garage or do you want to heat the entire garage while you are in it? There are calculators available for use at most any website that sells electric garage heaters for you to use, you simply impute the length, width and height of your garage and a few other variables to determine the correct size needed.

There are four types of convection fan forced heaters for the garage, here is a brief description of the four types.

The unit heaters are the most common heaters used, this is because they are commercial grade and heat the garage the fastest. Commercial grade garage heaters have a large fan and motor and therefore are the loudest of the four types simply because they are moving the most air. These are recommended for larger garages and can be mounted from a wall or ceiling with the use of brackets.

The wall heaters are used mostly in small to medium-sized garages. They are usually mounted from a wall stud and the smaller fan and motor make them much quieter.

The ceiling heater works great when there is little to no wall space available for use. The ceiling heaters do have a down side to them, They require that there be a finished ceiling for them to work efficiently. When the ceiling are not finished all the heated air just goes up into the beams and joists and is lost.

The portable plug-in heaters are available in either 120 volt or 240 volt versions. They typically come with a 6 foot cord and can be placed on the floor or on a work bench making sure that all objects are at least 3 feet away from the heater at all times. Before buying the 240 volt model you will have to make sure that your garage is wired for 240 volts, the standard 120 volt will not work.

The electric garage heaters that are wall mounted are either controlled by a built-in or wall mounted thermostat. You will find that some models will offer the option of built-in or wall mounted while other models will be just built-in or wall mounted only. Keep this in mind when deciding which you will want to use in your situation.

A built-in thermostat generally is a knob mounted on the outside of the heating unit. It works by turning the knob clockwise to turn the power on and to set your desired temperature. Turning the knob counter-clockwise will lower the temperature setting and if turned all the way will turn the unit off completely.

A wall thermostat works the same way that a built-in thermostat works but are much more energy-efficient to use, this is because the digitally programmable thermostats return more accurate temperature readings.
